This project was developed by Chelsea Cada when she was a Research Associate at Montana State University. She proposed completing a risk assessment to identify the ecological consequences of the establishment of P. antipodarum in the Madison River drainage of Yellowstone National Park and southwestern Montana. Because risk is a function of both "exposure" and "hazard", she needed to qualitatively and quantitatively describe both the "exposure" of the Madison River to P. antipodarum and the "hazard" posed by P. antipodarum establishment. The objectives of the project were to 1) to determine changes in the exposure by assessing the spread and status of populations since 1997 within the upper Madison River, including the tributaries, the Gibbon and the Firehole Rivers; 2) to assess the exposure of the lower Madison River (below Hebgen Reservoir) to P. antipodarum; and 3) to assess the hazard caused by P. antipodarum based upon on-going ecological research on P. antipodarum and examples from other invasive species. Because Ms. Cada left the project before it initiated, we completed the exposure assessment (first two objectives) and a portion of the hazard assessment (third objective) based data collected in 2007.
