Crotaphytus populations inhabiting western Arizona and Utah, Nevada, southern Idaho, southeastern Oregon and north and southeastern California are considered specifically distinct from C. collaris populations occupying areas farther to the east. Interspecies contact in Mohave County, Arizona, with a zone of hybridization approximately 100 m wide, is used as primary evidence for considering these entities specifically distinct, but their morphologies, especially of the adult males, are very dissimilar. The western populations, distinguished from C. collaris, are provisionally placed with the species C. insularis of eastern Baja California and adjacent southern California, but considered subspecifically distinct from that form.
