This report describes fire’s historic role in Waterton Lakes National Park (WLNP), southwestern Alberta, as part of a multi-year fire history and management study initiated in 1992. Goals were to determine presettlement fire history and fire regimes, and develop stand origin- and fuel type maps for the park. Fire history data establish a baseline reference for natural ecosystem functioning, useful for community monitoring, fire planning, and other management activities in WLNP. The information also is timely because this author has been conducting long-term fire history sampling in adjacent Glacier National Park (GNP), Montana.
