From the Article: "We examined the microbial community structure within three reaches of the dammed Elwha River and within the undammed Quinault River. Our objectives were to determine whether and to what extent two dams on the Elwha River have impacted the riverine biofilm (periphyton) microbial community structure, and if variations in this structure can be used as indicators of change for monitoring the effectiveness of a major river restoration project (the Elwha Ecosystem Restoration Project is currently the world's largest dam removal and fisheries restoration project). To our knowledge, there has been no work conducted using variations in riverine biofilm microbial community structure as a potential measure of the success of major river ecosystem restoration projects or the impact of dams on river systems."
