Trout populations sampled in the Devils Postpile National Monument between 1986 and 1991 averaged 5,455 fish/mile. Combined brown, rainbow, and brook trout populations->6 inches ranged from 1,194 to 4,736 fish/mile. During a 1988 creel survey, anglers fished an estimated 9,222 hours and caught 12,902 trout at an averaged rate of 1.40 trout/hour. Wild brown, rainbow, and brook trout comprised 49%, 29%, and 11% of the catch. Stocked rainbow migrating downstream into the Monument accounted for the remaining 11% of the catch. Comparisons are made with other California fisheries. The stream within the Monument is recommended for inclusion in the statewide Wild Trout Program.
