From the Executive Summary: "This report summarizes progress on the northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) monitoring program in Olympic National Park (ONP) in 2009. Monitored spotted owl territories in ONP, together with those visited by U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station (PNW) crews in the surrounding Olympic National Forest, make up the Olympic Peninsula Demographic Study Area. This is one of the eight demographic study areas called for under the Effectiveness Monitoring Plan for the Northwest Forest Plan. The goal of these studies is to estimate spotted owl population trends from demographic data. ...Barred owls (Strix varia) were first documented on the Olympic Peninsula in 1985, and competition with this species is now the primary threat to the conservation of spotted owls in protected areas such as ONP."
