Land cover patterns are a reflection of the physical and chemical factors that shape the environment of a given land area (Whittaker 1967). In turn, land cover composition, configuration, and connectivity help shape overall biological diversity patterns including the complex of species occurring in an area, movements of individual organisms, and energy and material flows (Levin 1981, Noss 1990, Dunning et al. 1992; Franklin 1993,Taylor et al. 1993). Substantial changes in these land cover patterns occur in response to natural and anthropogenic processes and can have numerous impacts on ecological processes.
