Water resource managers require water quality techniques useful for management. Plankton transect analysis provides a first approximation to pollution levels, and sample analysis techniques and use of chemical and biological indices are presented. Lake Mead, the largest man-made reservoir in the Western Hemisphere, is used as the test site. Phytoplankton numbers are given, based on the combined use of microscopic and membrane techniques. A plankton transect, supported by chemical data, shows the deleterious effect of the effluent in Las Vegas Wash on Lake Mead. Limited sampling along the transect would not have sufficiently defined the pollution source.
