Survival and movements of fledgling western bluebirds

Estimates of survival of western bluebirds during the post-fledging dependent (D) and semi-dependent (SD) periods were conducted using radiotelemetry on 27 fledglings. Daily rates of survival were 0.96 (D) to 0.99 (SD) and yielded an overall survivial rate of 0.64. Predation was the primary cause of mortality. Fledglings moved approximately 100m from the nest during the D period and 200-300 m during the SD period.
