Scorpion Inventory of Death Valley National Park

We conducted an inventory of the scorpion fauna at Death Valley National Park (DEVA), as a contribution to an ‘all taxa biodiversity inventory’. The specific objectives were to: (1) document the occurrence of as many scorpion species as possible through field surveys within the boundaries of the park; (2) collect and preserve representative specimens as vouchers; (3) document occurrence records published in peer-reviewed articles; and (4) develop a photographically illustrated guide to assist non-scientists in identification of scorpions within the park. A total of 60 surveys were conducted in 2008 and 2009. They verified the presence of 18 scorpion species, and identified 2 other species from a literature review. A minimum of 20 scorpion species occur at DEVA, but the authors suspect additional undocumented species may occur there as well. Biogeographic patterns, taxonomic considerations, and preliminary assessments of habitat associations for each species documented within the park boundaries are presented in a photographic identification guide.
