From the Introduction: "This report describes geologic studies of the area between the Quinault River valley and Sams Ridge that lies west of the Olympic National Park and east of the West Boundary Road (U.S. Forest Service Road 21). ... This work was undertaken to support the Department of Natural Resources state geologic map program ... as well as to provide information for forestry, petroleum, and wildlife studies. The main objective was to resolve structure and stratigraphy of the area mapped as "Tertiary undifferentiated" on the only geologic map of the area (Tabor and others, 1978a)."
