From the Abstract: "We investigated genetic relationships among adult winter steelhead from five coastal rivers (natural origin) and four hatcheries on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. We also determined population-of-origin steelhead from the Olympic Peninsula were compared to a collection of Chambers Creek winter steelhead from Elochoman River Hatchery and Lewis River Hatchery based on their wide use throughout Washington. A total of 935 adult winter steelhead were collected and analyzed in 2008 and 2009. Levels of genetic variability within and among collections were evaluated at 15 microsatellite loci. Hatchery-origin collections had lower measures of genetic diversity (hterozygosity and allelic richness) than the natural-origin collections. Assessment of the within population diversity ... revealed that all the collections were not comprised of a small number of family groups that would have limited genetic diversity."
