From the Introduction: "Coastal rain forests dominated by Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis, hearafter spruce) are among the most complex in the Pacific Northwest (Van Pelt et al 2006). In part, this forest complexity is reflected in the number of epiphytes and arboreal fauna found in large spruce trees. Ellyson and Sillet (2003) remarked on the high arthropod diversity on spruce epiphytes in old-growth redwood ... rainforests, and Winchester et al (1999) found a great diversity of arthropods within old spruce crowns in rainforest on Vancouver Island -- some of which were not found in the forest understory or in nearby younger spruce stands. ... This study was limited to soil-dwelling microarthropods. Larger, more mobile arthropods that dwell on the surface are difficult to associate with microhabitat on the scale of a single branch, as they may spend the majority of their lives elsewhere. ... This study was also limited to a single spruce tree."
