Mittelhauser GH, Connery JH, Jacobs J. 1996. Inventories of selected flora and fauna on 10 islands of Acadia National park, Maine. Natural Resource Technical Report: Northeast Region. Natural Resources Technical Report NPS/NESO-RNR/NRTR/96-01. United States. National Park Service. New England System Support Office. Boston, Massachusetts

The goal of this project was to provide resource information on existing species, rare or unusual species, habitats of concern to managers, and to identify potential threats to sensitive resources on 11 small islands within Acadia National Park: Baker Island, Bald Porcupine Island, Bar Island in Frenchman Bay, Bar Island in Somes Sound, Heron Island, The Hop, Little Moose Island, Pond Island, Schoodic Island, Sheep Porcupine Island, and Western Ear. Four hundred thirty-three species and 16 additional varieties and subspecies of vascular plants were found. No federally listed endangered or threatened plants were reported but 10 state listed species were identified. Eight forested islands were studied for current forest conditions. Maritime spruce/fir, early successional Maritime spruce/fir, mixed hardwood-conifer, and northern white cedar seepage communities were identified. Sixteen species of terrestrial mammals were recorded using various trapping methods and searches for sign on 11 islands. Three species of reptiles and amphibians were found. A qualitative assessment of human effects on resources was also made. Base maps showing vegetation features and all study sites were created for each island. FIELD WORK: 1992 - 1993. Conducted baseline ecological inventories of small park owned islands. Generated lists of mammals, vascular plants, amphibians, and reptiles for each island. Also characterized island forests and assessed human use and impacts. Includes summary and management recommendations /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /ISLANDS/Baker Island/Bald Porcupine Island/Bar Island/Bar Island/Heron Island/The Hop/Little Moose Island/Pond Island/Schoodic Island/Sheep Porcupine Island/Western Ear/ GIS-CATEGORY 1 ; Contains UTM coordinates for sampling stations on islands
