This report presents baseline information on the Haul Road (Dalton Highway) sport fishing effort, aerial population estimates of Arctic char in the Sagavanirktok River, fish species of the Killik River, winter fish habitats in the Colville River, and char life history in the Anaktuvuk River. Sport fishing associated with the Haul Road effort is light, concentrated around the pump stations and focused on Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus). Data presented on the physiography and fish species of the Killik River were obtained during a July 1980 survey conducted from Easter Creek to the River's mouth, in which only grayling and round whitefish were captured. In the winter-season Colville study, 1260 net hours yielded 435 fish comprised of six species; grayling (Thymallus arcticus) accounted for 88% of the catch. Preliminary information on the life history, migration, and post-spawning activities of char in the Anaktuvuk River is presented. Radiotelemetry was used for studying char activity under Anaktuvuk River ice. Anaktuvuk River char are compared to char from the Sagavanirktok River.
