One of 5 areas selected for documentation of baseline vegetation, the Levee 28 Tieback area lies across the boundary between the eastern part of the Big Cypress watershed and the western part of the Everglades watershed. Vegetation identified along the primary transect represents cypress head and wet prairie habitat. Other plant communities sampled are east of the area shown on the vegetation map [in back pocket] which the authors developed from color aerial photographs. The authors investigate the relationship of hydrological change to alterations of the vegetation. The study finds a 'high incidence of severe fire impacts in this area' [from the Summary and Conclusions], suggesting that the canal may exacerbate dry conditions. With a species list showing representation in each of 7 plant communities; elevation graphs and others; tables of statistics for trees, shrubs, and understory vegetation.
