A survey of the fish species in the lagoons, pools, and ponds found on Horn Island in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida and Mississippi. There is a description concerning the ecology and formation of ponds and a general description. The methods for collecting fish specimens included using seines, trammel nets, cast nets, and brail nets at designated sample sites on the island. The following physical parameters were recorded at the time of collections: salinity, temperature (air and water), vegetation types, condition of bottom, turbidity, effects of the tide, and time of collections. A table lists descriptive information concerning the sample sections: depth, bottom composition, submerged aquatic vegetation, salinity, temperature, number of visits, number of species collected, number of specimens collected, and percentage of total catch for most abundant species. The results are discussed and presented in an annotated species list. The species list shows and describes: common names, scientific names, locations and dates of captures, sizes, distributions, relative abundance, environmental parameters, speculations on species origin, stomach contents (selected species), some relevant aspects of life histories, and historical records. There are aerial photographs showing the extent of the lagoons, ponds, and pools found on the island. A map of the island shows the locations of lagoons, ponds, and pools on the island.
