Investigations of Balsam Woolly Aphid-Fraser Fir Interaction: Feed Site Characteristics and Wound Response
Eagar CC. 1985. Investigations of Balsam Woolly Aphid-Fraser Fir Interaction: Feed Site Characteristics and Wound Response. University of Tennessee
Young Fraser firs are less susceptible to the balsam woolly aphid than mature ones, as the insect attacks rough and splitting bark with many lenticels. Open grown trees healed faster than those in dense stands. Wounds from any cause are healed by the tree unless the substances that cause the healing are inhibited by secretions, such as chemicals that were experimentally applied and which are thought to be similar to the secretions of the balsam wooly aphid.
