The desert tortoise, (Gopherus agassizii), a federally listed species, is found in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Little is known of the population in the southern portion of the recreation area. The study area is in the Cottonwood Cove area (5 square miles), and south to the Newberry Mountains (2.7 square miles). Recommendations are de-escalation of campsites and beaching area; no development in the Newberry Mountains; cattle and burro grazing kept to a minimum; connections to the Piute Valley should be maintained so the National Recreation Area tortoises are an integrated part of the main population in that area.
