Vrana KJ and Batterson TR. 1989. Assessment of Conditions for Conducting Aquatic Research at Isle Royale National Park, Investigators Annual Report 1989. Mission Report MSGE-89-02. Michigan State University. East Lansing, MI
The prime objective of this project was to familiarize the aquatic ecologist with the operational requirements for conducting research at Isle Royale National Park. Still and video photography were taken at all sites. A scuba dive in the first cove to the northeast after entering McCargoe Cove resulted in the collection of submerged macrophytes from water depths ranging from 8 to 12 ft. Plants were identified according to Fassett (1957) or Voss (1972, 1985) as Elodea canadensis Michaux, Myriophyllum exalbscens Fernald, Isoetes species, and three Potamogeton species - one narrow-leaved and two broad-leaved one of which was thought to be Potamogeton praelongus Wulfen. There was one other plant that was thought to be a Ranunculus species. Reference is also made to a "scum" collected from submerged shipwrecks that was to be identified by electron microscopy.
