Mr. Rakestraw describes this report this way "This labor of love, by a Park Service employee, has a great deal to say about the fisheries, fishermen and shipping. It is based on first hand information and is throughly reliable." This report is a history of Isle Royale beginning with the physical setting and character of the island and the prehistoric peoples who mined copper; and then, the arrival of the white man, mining and fishing operations on the island, the history of the National Park movement, lodge operations, boat and plane operations.
