Juniper berries constitute the sole winter diet of the Townsend's solitaire (Myadestes townsendi) and this study determined the nutritional value provided by the berries. Nutrient content of Juniperus occidentalis berries was found to be similar to other temperate zone berry-like fruits, but, because moisture is low, energy and nutritional content are concentrated and the berries offer more value per unit. Juniper berries were collected from a 15-ha area on the SE shore of Eagle Lake, Lassen National Forest, Lassen Co., at 1550 m elevation.
