In response to the Exxon Valdez oil spill, three species of marine mammals (sea otter, Steller sea lion, and harbor seal) were monitored along the coast of Katmai National Park. Vessel-based surveys were conducted from late June through early September 1989 along the coast from Kashvik Bay in the north to Katmai Bay at the southern end of the Park. Two helicopter surveys were also conducted during this time. Haulout locations, population concentrations, and local movements were recorded and compared to available historical data. Interagency plans for further studies and proposed management zones and objectives are presented.
