Quadrants, band transects, random point contacts, size frequencies, fish and video transects, photogrammetric plots and species list surveys were used to monitor 68 species of algae, fish and invertebrates in the kelp forests of Channel Islands National Park. Of the 16 permanent transect sites studied, eight had healthy kelp forests and three had remnants or signs of developing forest dominated by purple sea urchins. Four sites were dominated by purple urchins and one by red urchins. Four sites contained high to moderate densities of white urchins, but two of those transects also had dense kelp forests over most of the transect.
