Shoes of marathon runners were scrubbed prior to the races in order to minimize the transfer of "noxious weeds" into the area. Materials removed by scrubbing were sifted and seeds identified. The seeds were then allowed to sprout in trays. Among the plants that resulted was the harmful plant Melinis minutiflora (molassesgrass). Table gives list of plants grown from the seeds collected from the runners' shoes.
