The kingsnake, Lampropeltis getulus sticticeps Barbour and Engels (1942), is apparently a valid form as described, differing from the nominate race in amount of white in the pattern interspaces and from all other members of the species in head shape. It occurs within the intra-Capes ecological zone herein defined. Intergrades occur on the Outer Banks from Cape Hatteras northward. Defining botanical, climatic and geological features of the intra-Capes zone are discussed.
