Physical and biological characteristics of 6 lakes in Alger County, MI, 3 of which are in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, are presented. The physical data about lake surface area, watershed area, volume, depth, length, breadth, and shoreline length of Beaver, Little Beaver, and Grand Sable Lakes were derived from topographic maps and lake contour maps with the use of a roller planimeter. Water exchange time was calculated from climatic records from Seney National Wildlife Refuge, and the towns of Chatham and Grand Marais, MI. Information on the soils of the watershed areas was taken from Soil Survey of Alger County, Michigan. Water quality measurements, including pH, specific conductance, total alkalinity, hardness, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and light transmittance were obtained from field collections. Most of the biological data was derived from Michigan Department of Natural Resource records, but data about aquatic plants and some fish were obtained by fieldwork. Management prescriptions are given. Bathymetric maps and maps delineating watershed areas are included.
