(Adapted from authors' abstract.) This 1982 Alaska Cooperative Park Studies Unit report describes and presents the findings of a vegetation mapping project begun in 1976 in Mt. McKinley National Park. The project was undertaken to assist in managing the McKinley Caribou Herd, specifically by characterizing the nature of the herd's range including both present and traditional use areas. Four vegetation maps were produced based on radiance data from two September 1974 and two July 1976 LANDSAT scenes. Matching surface conditions to radiance charactertistics was done by post facto comparisons with data on 642 ground plots and 600 low-level photo points. Substantial interscene difference in map quality resulted and some contributing factors are discussed.
