This article focuses on Cinder Cone and Feather Lake [Butte Lake] within Plumas County, located ten miles east-north-east of Lassen Peak. It is speculated that the eruption at Feather Lake is the most recent eruption in the United States. The only vegetation which has taken root on the Cinder Cone is a single Ceanothus bush, near the summit. The lava sheet has not undergone any weathering, and less than five yards from the cone, trees have all been killed. The area the Cinder Cone is found on is extremely volcanic, although "most of the eruptions are of great antiquity" with some younger volcanoes and smaller cones which may have been built "within a few thousands of years."
