Genetic diversity in Glyceria nubigena and Rugelia nudicaulis was assessed using allozymes. Both species are high elevation endemics found in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. Glyceria nubigena is listed as endangered in Tennessee and threatened in North Carolina. This plant is commonly known as Smoky Mountain mannagrass. Rugelia nudicaulis is also known as Rugel's ragwort and is listed as threatened in both Tennessee and North Carolina. Leaf samples of each collected on ice and later were cut finely and crushed in a mortar and pestle. Further information on extraction buffers, and enzyme stains are included in this paper. The low levels of allozyme diversity suggest that these species may have limited potential to adapt to changing environmental conditions.
