This manuscript presents a review of the theory of electrolyte leakage from lichens and its implications, a re-analysis of the results of the orginal Hart study, and a detailed discussion of many aspects of physiological measures of lichens for testing air pollution sensitivity. Seven reasons are given for concluding that such studies do not aid in evaluating the potential effects of SO2 on Class I areas. Geographic location:CRMO (Craters of the Moon National Monument), Pacific West Region Overall, Bennett says that current work done by Pearson at CRMO (Craters of the Moon National Monument) based on a National Park Service study by Hart and others in Everglades National Park was inadequate. Hart had found a relationship between lichen electrolyte leakage conductivity and SO2 air pollution damage.
