The area near the Four Corners Power Plant of New Mexico is host to 159 lichen species in 40 genera. The power plant appears to have little effect on the plants, because of the arid environment and because SO2 concentrations at ground level are relatively low, even though overall levels are relatively high. Lichens have proven to be effective indicators of air pollution, but may not be universally usable as a pollution indicator.
