This two-part report describes the fisheries and limnological conditions of Crescent Lake between 1979-82. It is based on a study designed to assess the lake's limnological conditions in relation to its rearing potential for juvenile sockeye salmon. The overall goal is to determine an appropriate enhancement strategy for sockeye salmon in Crescent Lake. Crescent Lake was found to be oligotrophic, a condition that is exacerbated by a mid-season inflow of cold, turbid glacial water which limits the lake's production potential for sockeye smolts. The light compensation depth of the lake is reduced in mid-summer to about 4 m due to the intrusion of turbid glacial runoff; in spring and fall the light compensation depth varies between 9 and 10 m. The open-water period lasts five months beginning in mid-June, and total phosphorus ranges from a premelt low of 4 ug/L to a peak of 10 ug/L in mid-August when turbid inflow is maximized. Algal response to peak total phosphorus lagged two-three weeks behind the peak total phosphorus inflow. In contrast, carbon uptake was reduced during the period of high turbidity.
