Limnological study of four lakes within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI included Secchi disk readings, temperature and dissolved oxygen profiles, water chemistry, and invertebrate population data. Results of water sample testing for pH, total alkalinity, conductivity, carbon dioxide, chloride, total phosphorus, reactive phosphorus, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), total hardness, total iron, sulfate, aluminum, lead, mercury, zinc, color, turbidity, and chlorphyll a (productivity) are given in Appendices and summarized and discussed in text. All lakes were well oxygenated, exhibited circumneutral pH, and contained dissolved iron. Heavy metals were either not present or in very low concentrations. Zooplankton densities were low. Benthic invertebrate communities were typically lentic (characteristic of standing water). The deep, southern basin of Chapel Lake was found to have a permanent chemocline and to be meromictic (the lower stratum of water does not mix with the water above). Big Beaver Lake was meso-trophic and its water turned over several times annually. Grand Sable Lake had relatively low chemical concentrations. Miners Lake was early to meso eutrophic. Author stated that none of the lakes has been seriously affected by man. Bathymetric maps with surface areas, volumes, shoreline lengths, and average depths are included.
