This report explains an approach to managing wild areas by utilizing Remote Sensing (RS) techniques and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to create a 'landscape ecology paradigm'. This allows for landscape changes and their potential impact to be assessed by land managers and make ecologically based decisions. The topography, fire ecology, soil erosion, and land use history of the Jemez Mountains and Bandelier National Monument, NM are used as a template for this study.
