This study looked at rock decomposition within hot springs at Lassen Volcanic National Park, focusing on Boiling Lake, Devil's Kitchen, Bumpass Hell, and Supan's Springs. Two minerals were found in the highest proportion, kaolin and opal, and were related to the amount of sulphuric acid encountered. When the acid was strong, as in areas subjected to steam and areas located above the water level of the springs, opal tended to form. In low acid concentrations, such as springs and mud pots, kaolin tended to form. Within this paper, different stages in decomposition were also elaborated on.
