Two mountain lion attacks on park visitors (August 2, 1984 and April 19, 1987) prompted park management to take steps to reduce future potentially serious lion-human interactions: (1) signing which informs park visitors of the presence of mountain lions and the need to check with a Ranger before hiking; (2) developing a brochure which discusses actions to take upon encountering a mountain lion; and (3) publishing an article in the park newspaper El paisano relating to lion-human interactions. Standard procedures upon notification of an attack include: (1) sealing off the attack area; (2) requesting the nearest available lion hunter to respond to the scene of the attack; and (3) assuming that the offending lion will still be at the scene of the attack and removing the lion if the opportunity presents itself.
