Long-Distance Migration of Drosophila

To examine patterns of fruit-fly migration and effects on genetic variation, these researchers released three species of Drosophila at Travertine Springs and at Salt Springs, both in Death Valley. Results provide evidence that the flies will leave a favorable area for bare desert, and also that they will fly long distances in a short time to get from one oasis to another. The paper discusses some minor unexplained aspects and points for future research (such as relationships between the need to release large numbers of flies in one area and the dispersal observed). Maps show the two release areas, and tables give recapture data for both.
