To examine patterns of fruit-fly migration and effects on genetic variation, these researchers captured and released three species of Drosophila at an oasis (Furnace Creek) in Death Valley. The paper discusses evidence from this study and from previous efforts supporting the probability that these flies are able to migrate (and interbreed) at considerable distances. This can explain a significant uniformity of genetic material among populations that appear to be isolated. The ability for occasional long-distance flight is more relevant to this determination than average distances the flies might move.
