This long-term (1977-1984) U.S. National Park Service study tested use limits in three common plant communities in Denali National Park. The communities studied were boreal forest, alpine tundra, and shrub tundra. The research found that areas dominated by grasses and rosette plants on well-drained soils could probably handle larger numbers of people than other communities. Use limits should be set according to the major type of vegetation within a given management unit. Recommendations are made on the general idea that a 50% loss in plant cover is too much.
