This work is one of 3 parallel projects. The other two are in Virgin Islands National Park and Dry Tortugas National Park. Volume 1 consists of 6 chapters: Chapter 1: Project Goals and Project Milestones 1989-1994 on "The Long-term Monitoring of Coral Reef Organisms in the Biscayne National Park." Description of the project and the effort to evaluate the use of video for monitoring coral reefs. Chapter 2: Disturbance to Florida Reef Corals: Effects of Hurricane Andrew and Tropical Storm Gordon Describes changes in live coral cover, differences between the two reefs (Ball Buoy and Triumph), changes in the dominant coral, Acropora palmata at Ball Buoy Reef, changes in other corals at both reefs. At the end are tables & graphs showing: changes in percent cover, species richness, and species diversity; the number of colonies of each coral species; events causing additions or loss in coral colonies (death, disappearance, fusion, sexual recruitment etc.) Chapter 3: A Decade of Change: An Analysis of Species and Community Changes in Corals of the Biscayne National Park and the Florida Reef Tract, 1984-1994 Discussion of trends in coral communities (species richness and cover, relative success of species) Chapter 4: A Direct Comparison Between Different Coral Reef Survey Methods Compared 4 survey methods (10,000 square meter count of species biodiversity, haphazard photographic survey, transect counts and permanent photostation quadrats) to see how they compared in describing the reef and in showing change. Chapter 5: Computer Simulations of Different Coral Reef Survey Methods from the Biscayne National Park, Part 1, Sampling Efficiency Compared sampling efficiency of six reef survey methods: linear transect, belt transect, random points, linear point intercept, belt point intercept and belt random points. Chapter 6: Computer Simulations of Different Coral Reef Survey Methods from the Biscayne National Park, Part 2, Sensitivity Analyses Compared sensitivity (ability to detect minor changes in coral cover) for the same six methods described in chapter 5. Volume 2 consists of black & white xerox copies of the underwater quadrat photographs. Volume 3 consists of tracings from the underwater quadrat photographs Volume 4 consists of digitized versions of the tracings Volume 5 consists of the actual data Volume 6 consists of color slide transparencies from all surveys 1989-1994 for Ball Buoy Reef and Triumph Reef in Biscayne National Park Volume 7 consists of video tapes for video photostations and video transects, 1990-1994 for Ball Buoy and Triumph Reefs in Biscayne National Park SUBTITLE: Field seasons including Tropical Storm Gordon resurvey & an analysis of pre- and post-hurricane coral reef community dynamics: Continuation of coral reef monitoring in the Biscayne NP.
