In 1938, a study was begun on the Blacks Mountain Experimental Forest in Lassen National Forest to test for and demonstrate the best method of harvest cutting for the management of interior ponderosa pine type. Six treatments (types of cutting methods) are 0 %, 16 %, 54 %, 56 %, 74 %, and 95 %. In 1990-91, the 50 year remeasurements were done of the plots. Four aspects of tree and stand dynamics were investigated to determine the long-term response to varying levels of partial cutting: diameter growth, volume production, changes in stand structure (diameter distributions), and changes in tree species composition. The data indicate that the larger dbh classes have lost the number of stems/ac even in control or lightly cut classes. This has been accompanied with an increase in the smaller dbh classes increasing the number of stems. This may have increased competition which may have resulted in reduced vigor and eventual mortality caused by bark beetles.
