Previous studies have shown that in Pennsylvania, where natural foods and foods provided by humans are abundant and black bears show the highest growth and reproductive rates reported for the species, litters with adopted cubs have shown high survival rates in their first year. This study examined the long-term survival of adopted cubs and the effects of adoptions on foster families in the Superior National Forest where food is less abundant and black bear growth and reproduction rates are much lower.
