This brief account covers the history of ranching in the Big Bend. The Big Bend Country today is one of the leading cattle-raising regions of Texas, internationally famed for the quality of its Highland Herefords. Perhaps because it was the last frontier conquered by pioneer Texas stockmen, in the twilight of the era of the long drive, the open range, and indeed the legendary Longhorn himself, most histories of the range cattle industry have devoted little attention to it. Yet, though sparsely documented, ranching in the Big Bend deserves better of historians of the cattlemen's frontier. The story of ranching in the Big Bend contains elements of drama that parallel the better known story east of the Pecos.
