Areas on Wetherill Mesa, Wild Horse Mesa, Long Mesa, Long Canyon and Chapin Mesa were surveyed for looper (geometrid caterpillars) activity. Percentage of damage per species was calculated. New growth per species was measured. Undamaged shrub species were recorded. Loopers were kept captive to determine amount of feeding per day. Insect feeding birds were noted in infested areas. Results showed 100% defoliation for serviceberry with varying damage to other species.
