Macrobenthic Inventory of the Aquatic Shoreline Habitats within the Gulf Islands National Seashore

A survey of the benthic macroinvertebrates in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida and Mississippi. This survey was designed to produce an inventory of benthic macroinvertebrates and baseline data for the entire park. Macroinvertebrates were sampled from exposed and protected beaches from each of the islands, seagrass beds, and lagoons. Methods for sampling involved: box-cores, kicknet sweeps, yabby pump pulls, population estimates (ghost shrimp), and plankton trawls. The following environmental data was collected/recorded: habitat type, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, air/water temperature, depth, submerged vegetation, substrate characteristics, sediment samples (for analysis), weather information, location, time, tide cycle, cloud cover, wind direction, seas, and distance from shore. The results are discussed and presented in tabular form. The appendicies (about 200 pages) show the following information: summary tables for box-core samples, densities of selected taxa from box-core samples, summary tables for grassbed kicknet samples, and summary tables for lagoon kicknet samples. A map shows the locations of sampling sites.
