Diversity and distribution of small mammals on montane islands cannot be explained in terms of equilibrium between colonization and extinction because there have been no colonizations since the Pleistocene. The area of interest is the entire great basin, but there is some specific reference to the Snake Range where Great Basin National Park is located (distance to nearest "montane island", presence of a select group of small mammals).
