Mammoth Cave in March

This article describes the physical features and relationship to Mammoth Cave of two separate caves in Mammoth Cave National Park: White Cave and Dixon Cave. The speleothems, pits, and rimstone dams of White Cave are described. The size, use in saltpetre mining, and earlier connection to Mammoth Cave of Dixon Cave is described. In addition, the expense of the Mammoth Cave Railroad, disappointment in the Mammoth Cave Hotel, clearing out of floor debris from Audubon Avenue, drilling and blasting in Ganter Avenue, acoustical experiments conducted in Chief City, and the cultivation of mushrooms in Mammoth Cave are also described.
