Since construction of levees along lower Redwood Creek, negative effects on young salmonids have increased when the estuary is rapidly drained. Local landowners have breached the natural summer berm to prevent flooded fields. To prevent flooding while protecting the fish, in 1981, the National Park Service artificially breached the berm a number of times so water drained slowly, and results show that this was largely successful. After describing this background (with its accompanying graphs, drawings, and photographs), the report goes on to present details of both temporary and long-term options for management of the estuary. Some of the proposals would provide good nursery habitat for the young fish, improving the overall fishery of Redwood Creek, with minimal damage to private agricultural land.
