This discussion of stream recovery following restoration of disturbed watersheds is based on Redwood Creek, Redwood National Park, California. Park staff have now treated over 270 km of former logging roads to reduce erosion and sediment input to area streams. Physical monitoring includes pool depth and frequency, channel bed elevation, and channel geometry--found so far to be the most useful indicators. Other physical aspects were monitored as well. The author's Abstract notes that until effects of a large storm allow comparisons between treated and untreated areas, ascertaining direct causes for any documented recovery is difficult. The conclusion suggests long-term future studies including biological responses, and the need for cooperative efforts with landowners upstream of the park who continue to build roads. A map of the Redwood Creek watershed shows road existing in 1978 and those in 1992, both within the park and upstream. Includes two channel cross sections and a longitudinal profile.
